a Doula?
Birth Doulas...
- Recognize childbirth as a
powerful experience that the mother will always remember;
- Understand the physiology
of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor;
- Assist the woman and her
partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth;
- Stay by the side of the
laboring woman throughout the entire labor;
- Provide emotional support,
physical comfort and an objective viewpoint, helping the woman get the
information she needs to make good decisions;
- Facilitate communication
between the laboring woman, her partner and their clinical care providers;
- Perceive their role as
nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of her birth experience.
Postpartum Doulas...
- Encourage parents to
develop and implement their own parenting style;
- Are trained in newborn
characteristics, care, feeding, and development;
- Enable the new mother to
recover from pregnancy and birth and focus on bonding with her baby;
- Enhance communication both
within the family and with other service providers;
- Make referrals to other
service providers when necessary;
- Perceive their role as
facilitating the transition to parenthood by supplying reliable and
factual information, reassurance and hands-on support.
