What is a Doula?

Birth Doulas...

  • Recognize childbirth as a powerful experience that the mother will always remember;
  • Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor;
  • Assist the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth;
  • Stay by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor;
  • Provide emotional support, physical comfort and an objective viewpoint, helping the woman get the information she needs to make good decisions;
  • Facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner and their clinical care providers;
  • Perceive their role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of her birth experience.

Postpartum Doulas...

  • Encourage parents to develop and implement their own parenting style;
  • Are trained in newborn characteristics, care, feeding, and development;
  • Enable the new mother to recover from pregnancy and birth and focus on bonding with her baby;
  • Enhance communication both within the family and with other service providers;
  • Make referrals to other service providers when necessary;
  • Perceive their role as facilitating the transition to parenthood by supplying reliable and factual information, reassurance and hands-on support.
